Guts, Glory and Violence of the World Cup Tournament

While watching the 2026 World Cup games in the United States, it reminded me of one of the most infamous World Cup soccer matches that was played between the United States and Colombia on June 22nd, 1994 in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California with a crowd of over 90,000 fans. It was the first time the United States hosted the World Cup tournament.

Colombia was the heavy favorite going into the match and a dark horse to win the World Cup. At the time, the US team had little international experience, no major professional league and limited success on the world stage.

Guts, Glory and Violence of the World Cup Tournament

In the opening match, the US tied Switzerland 1–1 which was an impressive beginning for Team USA. The US had confidence while the Colombian team lost to Romania 3–1 in their opening match.

Many experts did not give the US team a chance since the Colombians had beaten Argentina 5–0 during the World Cup qualifying match.

During the first half, Andres Escobar, who was primarily a defensive player for the Colombian team, he accidently deflected a cross into his own net, giving Team USA a shocking 1–0 lead. The US team had momentum and the crowd cheering for the massive upset. In the second half, the US scored again, giving them an insurmountable lead.

The Colombians did score late in the match but not enough time to even the score. It was the first World Cup win for the United States on home soil and effectively ended any hopes for the Colombian team to make it out of their group. It would be considered one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history and changed the trajectory for both teams.

What unfolded next not only shocked Colombians but the entire world. On July 02nd, a few weeks after their humiliating and stunning defeat, Escobar and a group of friends were outside a nightclub in Medellin, Colombia.

He had received numerous death threats and was warned not to leave his residence. Cartel members had lost money betting on Colombia and blamed Escobar’s auto-goal for losing the match and all their gambling losses. It was a significant amount causing many to fear for his life. Late that night outside the nightclub, a car with several men approached Escobar and his group of friends.

The assassins confronted Escobar and yelled “Auto gol!” in Spanish and then opened fire on him twelve times in the chest and head area. Escobar was killed immediately. His murder exposed the darkest side of sports, and how people are willing to kill a player or each other over a loss in a game. Escobar had a bad play that caused his country not to advance in their World Cup group; however, there was no justification in the manner he was executed in front of his friends in his hometown of Medellin. This was a criminal and cowardly act that received world-wide condemnation. The men involved were later arrested, convicted and sentenced to a relatively light prison sentence of eleven years.

The sentence did not fit the heinous murder of an innocent young man whose only crime was losing a soccer match.

It has been over thirty years since this awful incident, and now the United States is hosting another men’s World Cup tournament, this time with Canada and Mexico.

The combination of organized crime, gambling and crazy fanatics is a toxic combination for players and fans alike. No participant or fan deserves to be executed regardless of the outcome. Escobar’s death sentence by armed gunmen sent a chilling message across Colombia and the world.

Individuals will kill athletes and players over gambling bets and unsatisfactory results. It reveals that, for some, victory matters more than sportsmanship — even when it results in murder.

Thank you for bringing to light such a horrific incident. I had completely forgotten about the murder of that young Colombian soccer player.
Fans are all welcome in the spirit of the sport.
Fanatics out of control with vengeance to the point of committing murder is not acceptable in any arenas of a civilized nation.
