Three Weeks in October: The Beltway Killers
During three weeks in October 2002, John Allen Muhammad (age 41 at the time) and Lee Boyd Malvo (age 17 at the time) traveled in a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan killing indiscriminately ten people while wounding others in the Washington Metropolitan area and along I-95 in Virginia. These shootings captivated the United States and the world as the media spent hours covering the aftermath of each killing. Fear gripped the region as the shootings appeared random at any public location from gas stations, parking lots, stores and other places.
Arrest and End of the Killing Spree – October 24, 2002
On October 24, 2002, the killers were arrested at a rest area at night in Myersville, Maryland near I-70. This would end a nation-wide killing spree that stared in February 2002.
Muhammad Meets Lee Boyd Malvo

In the late nineties, Muhammad met Lee Boyd Malvo in the Caribbean island of Antigua. Malvo’s mother left using false documentation to move to South Florida, leaving Malvo under his supervision. In 2001, Muhammad was claiming Malvo to be his stepson and moved with him to the state of Washington.
Radicalization and Assassin Training

This is where the training began to mold Malvo from an innocent young man
to a trained assassin. Muhammad was angry at his ex-wife for taking custody
of their three children and was obsessed in taking back his family.
Muhammad believed life was not fair and wanted to terrorize innocent people
for the wrongs he had suffered. Malvo would be given his first test and pass by
killing a 21-year-old female in front of her aunt’s home near Tacoma, Washington.
This would be the start of cross-country shooting spree that terrorized the nation.
First Murder in Tacoma, Washington
In February 2002, Malvo allegedly at the direction of Muhammad shot and killed a 21-year-old at the front door of her aunt’s house in the Tacoma, Washington area. The victim’s aunt was good friends with Muhammad’s ex-wife and encouraged her to seek divorce.
Early 2002 Killings Across the United States
In March 2002, Malvo shot and killed a 60-year-old man practicing on a Tucson, Arizona golf course. The duo would continue killing and injuring innocent people the next few months in other states.
Louisiana Shooting and Later Apology Letter
In August 2002, a 51-year-old victim survived a close-range shot fired by Malvo in the neck in the Hammond, Louisiana area while he was changing a flat tire. The victim pretended to be dead while Malvo stole his wallet. He later went to a hospital and was treated for gun-shot wound. In 2010, Malvo would send the victim a letter of apology for his heinous actions of attempted murder.
Clinton, Maryland Shooting Incident
In early September 2002, a 55-year-old pizzeria owner was shot six times while locking up his business in Clinton, Maryland. The victim would survive and his laptop would later be found in Muhammad’s Chevy Caprice at the time of their arrest.
Atlanta and Montgomery Attacks
In late September 2002, Muhammad and Malvo fatally shot a 41-year-old using a .22 caliber pistol in Atlanta, Georgia around midnight. The victim was shot in the head and back while assisting the owner of a packaging store close for the night. Thirteen hours later, the pair shot and killed a 52-year-old liquor store clerk during an armed robbery in Montgomery, Alabama and critically injured another co-worker at the business.
A few days later, a 45-year-old woman was shot in the head outside a beauty shop in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area the killers used a Bushmaster .223 caliber assault rifle.
Beginning of the Beltway Sniper Attacks
In early October, they would start the shooting spree in the Beltway area causing severe panic and confusion leading to numerous deaths and serious injuries.
October 2–3 Beltway Area Killings
The D.C. snipers struck fast killing a 55-year-old program analyst at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on October 02, 2022 at the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse in Wheaton, Maryland. The following morning, the snipers killed four people in the span of two hours in the Aspen Hill area in Maryland and another victim that evening in the Takoma neighborhood in the District of Columbia. The shooting victims were killed at random locations from gas stations, Malls, at a bus stop while sitting on a bench, and a retiree walking in the Washington, D.C. area. Each victim was shot once from a distance with the blue Chevy Caprice leaving the scene soon after.
Nationwide Panic and Police Investigation
News coverage was intense and fear spread quickly throughout the Beltway. Police Chief Charles Moose of Montgomery County in Maryland became the face of the investigation. There was misinformation about a white box truck seen at the shooting in the Silver Spring attacks which led law enforcement searching for the wrong vehicle and not the blue Chevy Caprice.
“Call Me God” Tarot Card Discovery
At one of the shooting locations, investigators discovered a fired casing for a .223 caliber rifle and a Tarot card with the phrase “Call me God” on the front and on the back of the card “For you Mr. Police” and “Do not release this to the press”.
The shootings become more spread out from hours ap apart to days apart covering greater areas in Virginia and Maryland. All the victims ranged from a 13-year-old student to 73-year-old retiree including different professionals even an FBI analyst was shot and killed at a Home Depot parking lot outside of Falls Church, Virginia. The was no rhyme or reason to their shooting madness other than having a high body count while terrorizing communities.
Public Fear and Government Security Measures
Many gas stations had tarps around their businesses to conceal their customers, government buildings had heightened security including the White House, the U.S. Capital, the Supreme Court and the National Mall. The region was in shock and in lockdown mode. Muhammad and Malvo were wreaking havoc in the nation’s capital.
Ashland, Virginia Shooting and Ransom Letter
On October 19, 2002, around 8pm, a 37-year-old was shot in the parking lot near a Ponderosa restaurant on State Route 54 in Ashland, Virginia. Authorities discovered a four-page letter from the duo in the nearby woods demanding $10 million for the killings to stop.
Muhammad and Malvo would also call the police using public phones boasting of their shooting spree including unsolved murders in other parts of the country. They were teasing the authorities in a demented cat and mouse game.
Fingerprint Evidence and Identification
During this time, authorities were able to match Malvo’s fingerprint that was lifted at the Middle School shooting and match it to a previous arrest Malvo had in the state of Washington while also connecting his fingerprints to the Montgomery liquor store shooting. Law enforcement was able to identify John Muhammad because of the close association between him and Malvo.
Soon thereafter, authorities issued lookout for a dark blue Chevy Caprice sedan with New Jersey plates and no longer the mysterious white box truck that was suspected to have been used by the shooters. Other witnesses at different shootings had also seen a blue Chevy Caprice leaving the crime scenes while police had different minor encounters with them and the vehicle during this period in October.
Final Capture in Myersville, Maryland
On October 24, 2002, at around 3:15 a.m. Muhammad and Malvo were found sleeping in their vehicle by law enforcement at a rest stop off Interstate 70 near Myersville, Maryland. The nation-wide murdering spree was over.
After the arrest, their vehicle that was converted into a mobile snipers’ nest was seized and searched for evidence. A stolen Bushmaster .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle model XM-15 equipped with a holographic weapon sight was discovered in Mohammad’s vehicle. The weapon had an effective range close to 1,000 feet.
Possible Motives Behind the Crimes
There were different motives that authorities believed triggered Muhammad including a bad divorce where he lost custody of his children, injustices in America for being racially black, and hardships he had endured wanting to terrorize and punish those in society in retribution.
During the trials in the fall of 2003 in southeastern Virginia, Muhammad and Malvo were found guilty of murder and weapons charges while the jury for Muhammad recommended the death penalty and the jury for Malvo recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole. Both judges concurred with the jury’s recommendations.
On November 10, 2009, Muhammad was executed by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. Muhammad had no final words to say.
Civil Settlement with Victims (2005)
In 2005, Bushmaster, the firearms manufacturer and Bull’s Eye, the Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) from Tacoma, Washington where the rifle was allegedly stolen from settled with the victims of the shootings for an amount of $2.5 million.
